Mirza Fakhrul sworn in as Bangladesh’s 23rd president

DHAKA, Aug 22 — Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sworn in as the 23rd President of Bangladesh yesterday.

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha reported that the oath-taking ceremony was held at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban at 7.30pm (local time).

Acting Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal administered the oath.

Upon his arrival at Bangabhaban, the president-elect was welcomed by senior officials before being received by Acting President Hafiz Uddin Ahmad Bir Bikram.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the chief justice, Cabinet members, foreign diplomats, MPs, and senior civil and military officials attended the ceremony.

Following the oath-taking, Mirza and the outgoing acting president exchanged seats, symbolising the formal transfer of office.

He then signed the oath of office and oath of secrecy before the ceremony concluded with the national anthem.

MPs elected Mirza, one of the country's most senior political leaders and a former secretary-general of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, as the country's 23rd President in accordance with the Constitution of Bangladesh.
