Johan Setia records Malaysia’s only unhealthy API reading

SHAH ALAM, Aug 18 — Johan Setia in Klang was the only location in Malaysia with an unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) reading this morning.

According to the Air Pollutant Index Management System portal, the Johan Setia monitoring station recorded 160 as of 10am.

Another 65 areas recorded moderate API readings, including all other monitoring stations in Selangor, including Shah Alam (84), Banting (80), Klang (78), Petaling Jaya (72), and Kuala Selangor (72).

Only two areas: Langkawi in Kedah (31) and Kangar in Perlis (29), recorded good readings.

An API reading between zero and 50 indicates good air quality, 51 to 100 is moderate, 101 to 200 is unhealthy, 201 to 300 is very unhealthy, and readings above 300 are classified as hazardous.

The API data are updated hourly based on readings from 68 air quality monitoring stations nationwide.

Previously, the media reported that haze conditions in the Klang Valley and Sarawak had improved following wet weather over the past few days.

However, the Malaysian Meteorological Department’s director-general Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the country remains in the southwest monsoon period until the end of September, with the risk of haze persisting if open burning activities are not controlled.
