SHAH ALAM, Aug 15 — A staff member from the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), who was tasked with transporting the Kelantan chess team for the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026, died of a heart attack last night.
The 49-year-old man was found unconscious after the sports utility vehicle (SUV) he was driving skidded off the road at Tonggak 10, Sungai Besar near Sabak Bernam at about 7.35pm.
Sabak Bernam district police chief Superintendent Md Yusof Ahmad said investigations found that the victim was a public service driver attached to JPS Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
“The victim was transporting the Kelantan athletes who were taking part in SUKMA chess in Sabak Bernam.
“There were no criminal elements involved, and a post-mortem at the hospital found that the cause of death was a heart attack,” he was quoted as saying by Kosmo.
Earlier, the victim was found inside a JPS-owned Nissan X-Trail after the vehicle skidded off the road at the location.
The fire and rescue department received a call reporting that the vehicle’s doors were locked before members of the public managed to open them.
