SHAH ALAM, Aug 12 — Klang’s hosting of seven Malaysian Games (SUKMA) events is expected to generate economic spillover benefits from the presence of athletes, officials, families and supporters, said Mayor Dato’ Abdul Hamid Hussain.
He added that the biennial sporting event is set to spike demand for accommodation in and around the city, with three- to five-star hotels and homestays likely to receive more bookings.
He also said local traders will have opportunities to increase their earnings.
“The hosting of seven SUKMA events in Klang will attract hundreds of athletes, along with their families, team officials and supporters, which will in turn have an impact on the tourism sector and local economy,” he told Media Selangor.
The seven events are:
Basketball at Bukit Tinggi 2 Basketball Hall
Lawn bowls at Bayuemas Lawn Bowls Complex
Men’s hockey at Pandamaran Hockey Stadium
Rugby at Padang Sultan Suleiman
Muay Thai at KSL Esplanade Mall
Men’s cricket at Bayuemas Oval
Table tennis at MBDK Bukit Raja Hall
Hamid said it is anticipated that visitors gain a new perspective on Klang, allowing them to experience the uniqueness of the royal city and encouraging their return.
He added that SUKMA provides an excellent opportunity to promote Klang as a destination with various historical, cultural and culinary attractions to visitors from across the country and beyond.
SUKMA Selangor 2026 will be held from August 15 to 24 with 469 events in 37 sports, while Para SUKMA will be held from September 5 to 14 with 316 events in 10 sports. The opening ceremony will be held at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam, with a contingent from Brunei invited as a guest.
As host, Selangor is targeting 80 gold medals.
