Over 2 mln affected by tropical depressions in Philippines, 19 deaths recorded

MANILA, Aug 11 — The Philippines' Office of Civil Defence (OCD) has verified reports that 19 people died in the aftermath of Tropical Depressions Luis and Maymay and the southwest monsoon, while about 2.2 million people have been affected by the series of weather disturbances.

The Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported that OCD public information officer Diego Mariano said 12 of the reported deaths being verified were in Benguet, four in Rizal, and three in Batangas.

The OCD also reported 15 people injured, including 12 in Benguet and one each in Ilocos Sur, Rizal, and Cavite.

In a message to the media today, he added that four people remain missing, three in Benguet and one in Batangas, while 646,676 families, consisting of 2,270,862 people, were affected in the Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Calabarzon, the Cordillera Region, the National Capital Region, and Mimaropa.

An estimated 919 evacuation centres are sheltering about 26,174 families, consisting of 94,997 individuals.

A total of 639 houses were damaged by the inclement weather, while 45 were destroyed.

Meanwhile, damage to infrastructure was estimated at ₱1.46 million (RM98,112), and damage to agriculture at ₱135.33 million (RM9.10 million).
