SHAH ALAM, Aug 10 — A contract worker died after he was believed to have fallen into a 10-metre-deep water storage tank while carrying out maintenance work at the Kuala Langat Power Plant in Banting last night.
The victim, Mohd Farhan Syazwan, 34, was found at about 4 am today following a search and rescue operation by the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM).
Selangor JBPM assistant director of operations Ashrul Riezal Ashbar said the department received an emergency call regarding the incident at 7.26 pm.
He said a team of firefighters and officers from the Banting Fire and Rescue Station, together with Water Rescue Teams (PPDA) from the KLIA and Port Klang fire and rescue stations, were deployed to the scene.
"The operations commander said the victim and his co-worker were carrying out maintenance work to replace timber at the cooling tower at the time.
"The victim's co-worker then left the area to collect timber and returned about 15 minutes later to find him missing.
"Initially, the co-worker thought the victim might have gone to the toilet, but began to suspect that he had fallen after he failed to return. He then informed the supervisor, and checks confirmed that the victim was missing," he said in a statement today.
Ashrul Riezal said rescuers first drained the first tank but were unable to locate the victim.
He said the operation then continued with the draining of a second tank, which was 10 metres deep, where the victim was found at about 4 am.
"Firefighters entered the tank and brought the victim to the surface. He was pronounced dead at the scene before his body was handed over to police for further action.
"The search and rescue operation ended at 5.05 am," he said.
