Singapore grants conditional approvals for 900MW power imports from Malaysia

SINGAPORE, Aug 7 — Singapore has granted conditional approvals to two companies to import a total of 900MW of electricity from Peninsular Malaysia, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) said today.

In a statement, EMA said the projects will supply power generated from solar and battery energy storage systems located in Johor.

EMA said the two companies are Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd, which has proposed a capacity of 300MW, and Southern Solar Alliance Pte Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Malaysian developer Ditrolic Energy Holdings Sdn Bhd, which has proposed a capacity of 600MW.

“Sembcorp Utilities and Southern Solar Alliance are working towards commencing commercial operations around 2029.

“They will need to obtain all requisite approvals from relevant jurisdictions, conclude power purchase agreements with buyers, secure sufficient financing, and conclude various project development milestones in order to reach financial close,” it said.

According to EMA, the conditional approvals build on the strong momentum in bilateral energy cooperation between Singapore and Malaysia.

They follow an earlier conditional approval for the import of up to 1GW of low-carbon electricity from Sarawak to Singapore.

The approvals also complement the Joint Development Agreement signed by Singapore Energy Interconnections (SGEI), SP Group and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) to undertake detailed feasibility studies for a second electricity interconnection of up to 2GW between Singapore and Peninsular Malaysia, it added.

“To date, EMA has granted conditional approvals and conditional licences to 13 electricity import projects from Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

“EMA will continue to engage companies with credible and commercially viable import proposals that can contribute to the decarbonisation of the power sector,” it said.
