KLUANG, Aug 7 — A 19-year-old college student was charged in the Magistrate's Court here today with the murder of her newborn baby girl at a house here last week.
Nurshazwen Mohd Idris nodded in understanding after the charge was read out before Magistrate Nurasidah A. Rahman.
No plea was recorded as the murder charge falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
According to the charge, Nurshazwen is accused of murdering the baby girl she gave birth to at a house in Jalan Setia Mutiara 2/6, Taman Setia Mutiara, at about 10 am on July 29.
She was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, along with whipping, if the death penalty is not imposed.
The court denied bail and fixed October 8 for mention of the case pending chemical, psychological and post-mortem reports.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nik Noratini Abd Rahman appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented.
Police had previously arrested Nurshazwen and her 19-year-old boyfriend, who is also a college student, to assist in the investigation into the murder of a baby girl found with multiple stab wounds in the toilet bowl of a rented house.
Investigations also found that the student gave birth to another baby girl at a hospital after doctors discovered a second twin remained in her womb during a medical examination.
Yesterday, police released the boyfriend after he was designated as a prosecution witness.
