SHAH ALAM, July 30 — The state remains confident of achieving its target of 80 gold medals at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), which officially begins on August 15.
State executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said the target has been maintained based on the current performance and level of preparation of more than 1,000 athletes, who are now in the final phase of training ahead of the Games.
"We are maintaining our projection of 80 gold medals. In terms of preparations, we are now in the final stage. There are only about two weeks left before SUKMA begins.
"As for the opening ceremony, Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation) or MBI is carrying out the final preparations to ensure the event runs smoothly.
"InsyaAllah (God willing), we will ensure that although the ceremony is held on a modest scale, it will still be vibrant. More importantly, we want to ensure that the organisation and management of all sporting events are carried out to the highest standard," he said.
Najwan was speaking to the media after the closing parade of the Decentralised Volunteer Officer Cadet Course Series 2/2026 at the 502 Territorial Army Regiment Camp in Sungai Buloh today.
He added that briefing sessions for SUKMA volunteers are being actively conducted to ensure the smooth organisation of the biennial Games.
"We have completed briefing sessions for volunteers organised by the Selangor Youth and Sports Department.
"InsyaAllah, there will be several more phases of briefings for volunteers, and at this stage we are fully prepared," Najwan said, noting that all SUKMA venues have been upgraded and are now ready for use.
"On August 8, the reopening ceremony of the Selangor Aquatic Centre will be held and officiated by the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah," he said.
The 22nd edition of SUKMA will feature 469 events across 37 sports at 52 venues located in nine districts throughout Selangor.
Meanwhile, the Para SUKMA will feature 369 events across 10 sports: swimming, athletics, badminton, table tennis, tenpin bowling, lawn bowls, archery, chess, boccia, and powerlifting.
The country's largest multi-sport event will be contested by all state contingents, with Brunei Darussalam also participating as an invited contingent, bringing the total to 15.
