KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — Malaysians in Japan have been advised to remain vigilant and closely monitor local conditions following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck the Kumamoto prefecture in the Kyushu region.
The Embassy of Malaysia in Japan also advised citizens to refer to the Japan Meteorological Agency's website, for the latest updates, warnings, and advisories.
In a Facebook post, it said that those requiring emergency assistance may contact the embassy at +81 3 3476 3840 (office hours), +81 70 1471 9756 (after office hours), or via e-mail at mwtokyo@kln.gov.my or consular.tyo@kln.gov.my.
Japan’s Kyodo News reported that tsunami advisories were issued for the Ariake and Yatsushiro seas following the quake but were later lifted.
Many are feared injured as authorities scrambled to assess the extent of the damage amid reports of collapsed buildings, fires, power outages, and traffic disruptions after the earthquake.
The weather agency urged people to remain alert for quakes of similar intensity over the next few days and warned of heatstroke as temperatures in Kumamoto are expected to reach 35°C or higher.
