SHAH ALAM, July 24 — Super El Nino hasn’t really affected Selangor’s agriculture sector and water reserves are sufficient, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim.
He said the state government is monitoring the weather, river levels and water resources to ensure agricultural activities can proceed without major disruptions.
“There is a bit of change due to the hot weather, but it’s not that bad because our water supply is still sufficient.
“The levels of Selangor’s seven dams are around 85 to 90 per cent,” he said when met after launching the Selangor Fruit Festival at Aneka Walk here today.
Izham said the state is still producing enough fruits while padi yields haven’t shown worrying declines, even in this hot weather.
However, he said, price hikes are expected if extreme weather prolongs and affects yields and reduces retail stock.
“But we haven’t reached that point,” he said.
Izham earlier encouraged Selangoreans to eat more local fruits to reduce Malaysia’s RM7.5 million import expenditure for fresh produce and boost agropreneurs’ earnings.
The Selangor Fruit Festival, which ends Sunday, is a collaboration between the Agriculture Committee, Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA), Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS), and Shah Alam City Council (MBSA).
