SHAH ALAM, July 24 — The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) has allocated RM21.5 million for the maintenance and repair of low-cost high-rise public housing in Selangor from 2021 to 2026, with priority given to critical safety-related works such as lifts, roofs, and electrical systems.
Its minister Nga Kor Ming said the allocation comprised RM10.05 million under the 12th Malaysia Plan and a further RM11.45 million this year, both implemented under the Housing Maintenance Programme.
"KPKT, through the National Housing Department, remains committed to ensuring the safety and comfort of residents in low-cost high-rise housing schemes," he said in a written Parliamentary reply to the Dewan Negara yesterday.
Nga was responding to Senator Tiew Way Keng’s query on the federal government’s intervention plan and special assistance to upgrade basic facilities, lifts, and safety at densely populated low-cost housing schemes in Selangor.
He added that the PPP supports the maintenance and repair of People’s Housing Programme (PPR) flats and other low-cost strata housing, covering 10 priority areas namely lifts, water tanks and reticulation systems, sanitary pipes, roofs, staircases and handrails, painting, electrical wiring, common property, fences, and slopes.
Funding constraints meant that KPKT had to adopt a more targeted approach in approving projects, prioritising defects that have the greatest impact on the safety and comfort of residents.
Priority is given to PPR projects and low-cost housing that are over 10 years old.
Nationwide, Nga said KPKT has spent RM159.1 million under the PPP throughout the 12MP.
However, for 2026, it has an allocation ceiling of only RM44.6 million, covering just 56 per cent of the RM79.9 million in total funding sought through 226 applications.
