SHAH ALAM, July 23 — The Selangor government has unveiled a short- and medium-term flood mitigation plan for Petaling Jaya involving 39 projects and worth RM40.56 million, said state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim.
He said the plan, to take immediate effect, is set to reduce flood risks while improving affected areas’ climate resilience.
He said 12 flood hotspots have been identified across the city, including three critical locations — Section 51A, Kampung Cempaka, and Jalan Kuala Selangor (FT54).
“The scope of work includes upgrading and increasing river capacity, constructing outlet structures, maintaining drainage systems, building flood retention ponds, and installing flood warning systems.
“This plan is being implemented through strategic collaboration between the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Public Works Department (JKR), and technical agencies to ensure every project can be carried out effectively,” he told a press conference at the State Secretariat Building here today.
Also present was Petaling Jaya Mayor Dato’ Mohamad Zahri Samingon.
Last week, heavy rain triggered flash floods in at least eight locations across Petaling Jaya, while one fallen tree was reported.
Among the affected areas were Jalan 222, Jalan 1A/71G (Jalan Carey) and Jalan 14/1 near the FAS Kelana Jaya Tunnel, Kampung Cempaka, Medan Selera 223, Jalan Seroja in Kampung Sungai Kayu Ara, and Lorong 16/7A in Section 16.
This was the third series of flash floods in the city this year, after similar occurrences in April and May.
Izham said the Petaling Jaya flood mitigation plan was designed after site visits and assessments performed in May to identify comprehensive solutions to recurring flash floods.
He added that the State Executive Council agreed yesterday to directly appoint contractors for the short-term projects to ensure works are completed on time.
“In other local authorities’ jurisdictions, most flood mitigation solutions have already been completed. Even in Meru, floods have become less frequent. What we planned has been implemented and, thank God, it has been successful,” Izham said.
