SUKMA athletes' safety guaranteed, says Selangor police

SHAH ALAM, July 23 — Selangor police have assured the safety of all athletes taking part in the 22nd Selangor Malaysia Games (SUKMA) ahead of the sporting event in mid-August.

Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said security arrangements would be coordinated with the state administration to ensure all preparations and logistical matters proceed smoothly.

“Thanks to God, Selangor will host SUKMA this year and, for that purpose, the organisers have long been in contact with Selangor police regarding security assistance.

“We will also ensure that athletes from other states coming to compete in Selangor are safe and well protected. Their safety is guaranteed,” he said at a press conference yesterday, as reported by Harian Metro.

Shazeli said the number of personnel to be deployed had yet to be determined as the police were still finalising operational plans.

On Tuesday, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari announced that Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam had been selected as the venue for the SUKMA 2026 opening ceremony, while the closing ceremony would be held at Aneka Walk in Section 14 here.

He said the two locations were chosen to give the public an opportunity to experience the games up close and take part in the various activities and performances on offer.

SUKMA Selangor 2026 is scheduled to take place from August 15 to 24, featuring 469 events across 37 sports at 52 venues spanning nine districts.

The games will be followed by PARA SUKMA 2026 from September 5 to 14, featuring 316 events in 10 sports: swimming, athletics, badminton, table tennis, tenpin bowling, lawn bowls, archery, chess, boccia and powerlifting.

All state contingents will participate in the games, alongside Brunei Darussalam, which has confirmed its participation as an invited contingent, bringing the total number of competing contingents to 15.
