Harapan urges respect for customary institutions, rejects political games

SHAH ALAM, July 21 — Pakatan Harapan election director Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari asserts that any dispute about the roles of Yang di-Pertuan Besar and Undang Yang Empat in Negeri Sembilan mustn’t be politicised, but resolved according to customary laws.

He added that customary institutions must be respected and cannot be made an excuse to change the state’s political landscape.

“To determine the validity of Undang (Yang Empat) and the position of Yang di-Pertuan Besar should be resolved in the customary law ecosystem. It shouldn’t be mixed with political considerations,” he said in an interview with Suara TV recently.

Amirudin claimed that Negeri Sembilan’s political unrest began when Barisan Nasional (BN) pulled support for then menteri besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun, before efforts emerged to form new political alignments to take over the state.

He said these strategies came about even though the government, which was formed after the 2023 state election, had a clear majority.

He added that the country’s 2020-2022 political instability proves that frequent changes of government doesn’t benefit the economy nor the administration.

“If the uncertainty persists, investor confidence would be affected, the people don’t have certainty, and administrative management at various levels will become difficult,” he said.

Amirudin opined that the best way is to return the mandate to the people to decide which government has clear legitimacy to lead Negeri Sembilan.

He asserted that Harapan remains respectful of the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar and Undang Yang Empat, as enshrined in the Federal Constitution and Laws of the Constitution of Negeri Sembilan 1959.

“This matter must be clarified so we don’t drown in disputes or are seen as taking advantage in a crisis involving the position and validity of customary institutions.

“If some quarters want to take over the administration through means that are not the people’s choice, then the mandate must be returned to the people to decide,” Amirudin added.
