SHAH ALAM, July 20 — Retirees' associations should continue to be strengthened as platforms that bring together experienced individuals so that their expertise and knowledge can continue to benefit society.

Former Selangor Islamic Religious Council chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof said associations such as the Selangor Muslimah Retirees Club (KPMS) play an important role in bringing together former public- and private-sector employees with extensive experience and expertise across various fields.

"We believe retirees' associations are very important and should be sustained because their members comprise former government and private sector employees with a wealth of experience.

"Without an association to bring them together, all the experience, skills, and knowledge they possess would simply be lost, as there would be no platform for them to continue contributing," he said.

Abdul Aziz was speaking to Media Selangor after officiating at the KPMS Hi-Tea event, in conjunction with Retirees' Day 2026, at the Shah Alam Club yesterday.

He added that KPMS's efforts should continue to receive support so that more retirees can be brought together, ensuring their experience and expertise are put to good use.

Abdul Aziz also congratulated the KPMS leadership for successfully bringing together nearly 900 members, who are now actively involved in various welfare and community programmes.

Meanwhile, retired Immigration Department senior officer Jaleha Adnan, 65, said retirement should not be seen as a barrier to remaining active and contributing to society.

She noted that after retiring during the COVID-19 pandemic, she became actively involved in various non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

"I have remained active since retiring. If I simply stayed at home and rested, I feel my health would deteriorate more quickly.

"That is why I chose to continue participating in community activities," Jaleha said.

Retired teacher Zuraida Zulkifli, 61, said she has also chosen to remain active after retirement by running a small business, helping to market products from small and medium-sized enterprises, and taking part in various NGO programmes.

"I have never been the type to sit still. Besides running a business, I enjoy sharing my skills and contributing to the community.

"Activities like these keep us energetic. My advice to those approaching retirement is to prepare themselves mentally and physically.

"Do not stop being active as soon as you retire, because that can cause you to become weaker," she said.
