SHAH ALAM, July 19 — Schools in Selangor need to increase the number of environmental sustainability programmes to nurture a younger generation that is well prepared to face the challenges of climate change.
State executive councillor for public health and the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said doing so can raise awareness and encourage students to play an active role in protecting the environment through actions that benefit the community.
"Congratulations to the students and staff of SMJK Yoke Kuan for successfully implementing an integrated aquaponics project involving the farming of tilapia, catfish, and coral lettuce.
"This achievement demonstrates that young people are not only capable of understanding sustainability issues but are also able to translate their ideas into actions that benefit the community," she said in a Facebook post.
Jamaliah added that the project was carried out under the Rakan Bumi Climate Action Challenge, a state government initiative implemented by the Standing Committee on the Environment to empower young people to address the challenges of climate change.
"Congratulations on the creativity, commitment, and enthusiasm demonstrated throughout the implementation of this project.
"I hope more students will come forward as agents of change in protecting the environment and building a more sustainable future.
"May the success of SMJK Yoke Kuan inspire other schools to implement similar initiatives that create a positive impact on both society and the environment," she said.
