BUTTERWORTH, July 17 — One of the most common excuses given by commercial vehicle drivers who tested positive for drugs was that they had taken the substances to boost their energy while driving, the Penang Road Transport Department (JPJ) said, referring to its Integrated Drug Operation on Commercial Vehicles that has been underway since July 1.

State JPJ director Zulkifly Ismail said inspections found that most drivers claimed they had taken prohibited substances to help them stay alert and energetic while driving.

“This shows that there are still a number of drivers operating vehicles under the influence of drugs, and the situation cannot be taken lightly as it involves the safety of thousands of road users every day.

“JPJ will not compromise with any individual found driving a commercial vehicle under the influence of drugs, as such actions could cost innocent lives,” he told a press conference after observing the operation at the Sungai Dua Toll Plaza southbound here last night.

Zulkifly said that, from July 1 until yesterday, 121 commercial and private vehicle drivers had been screened, with 12 testing positive for drugs.

Of the 12, 10 were goods vehicle drivers, while the remaining two were private vehicle drivers in their 40s, he said.

He said six of the 12 individuals tested positive for ketum, five for methamphetamine and one for tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound found in cannabis.

“All those who tested positive in the urine screening were detained by the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) for further action. If convicted, their driving licences may be suspended or revoked,” he said.

At the same time, he reminded employers to ensure that the drivers they hire are free from drug abuse, warning that companies that fail to comply with licensing requirements could also face action under the Land Public Transport Act 2010, including the suspension of their operator’s licences.

He added that the integrated operation was carried out in collaboration with the AADK, the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) and PLUS Malaysia Berhad to strengthen compliance with the law and enhance road safety, while ensuring that commercial vehicle drivers remain competent and free from the influence of drugs while on the road.

The operation was conducted at strategic locations, including toll plazas, enforcement stations and bus terminals, to facilitate comprehensive inspections of drivers identified as high-risk.
