SHAH ALAM, July 6 — The opening ceremony for the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) Selangor 2026 in August will be held at Dataran Kemerdekaan Shah Alam or Setia City Convention Centre, said state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi.
He said a decision will be made soon after all aspects are considered, especially costs, seeing as the event is being held with limited funding.
“Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation), or MBI, will coordinate the opening ceremony. It will assess from a cost standpoint, and this is a strategy to prevent the state from incurring a high financial commitment.
“Let us use minimum cost but still give a huge impact to the community, plus this ceremony is in line with the Sultan of Selangor’s (Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj) decree to save costs. Opening and closing (ceremony) costs will be borne by state government subsidiaries,” he told a press conference after the SUKMA XXII and Para SUKMA Selangor 2026 Sponsors and Patrons’ Meet-and-Greet Ceremony here today.

Najwan added that Selangor’s preparations as host are nearly done, with the focus now on choosing venues for the opening and closing ceremonies.
“From the infrastructure and technical standpoints, it’s all done. Even though we’re moving with limited scope of expenditure, for sports development, we will not compromise,” he said.
In another development, Najwan said more than 900 athletes have been shortlisted for the Selangor contingent to SUKMA, with 469 medals up for grabs.
SUKMA Selangor will see 469 events in 37 sports from August 15 to 24, while Para SUKMA will feature 316 events in 10 sports from September 5 to 14.
