SHAH ALAM, July 1 — Flooding in Kuala Langat is expected to improve once three long-term flood mitigation projects currently being planned and implemented across the Langat river basin are completed.

Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the projects, with a combined estimated cost of RM1.23 billion, are aimed at reducing flood risks throughout the river basin, including downstream areas such as Kuala Langat.

“Although these projects are being implemented in the upper and middle sections of the Langat river basin, they are expected to contribute to an overall reduction in flood risks throughout the basin, including downstream areas such as Kuala Langat,” he said in a written parliamentary reply yesterday.

He was responding to Kuala Langat MP Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi, who asked about the total federal allocation for flood mitigation projects in Kuala Langat since 2020 and the long-term plan to address flooding in the district's hotspots.

Fadillah said one of the three projects is currently at the pre-implementation stage, namely the Sungai Langat Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) Phase 2 Package 1 in Hulu Langat, which is undergoing detailed design preparation and is expected to be tendered in 2027.

“The other two projects are already under construction, namely the Sungai Langat RTB Phase 2 Package 2 in Sepang, which is scheduled for completion in April 2031, and the Langat River RTB Phase 1, which is expected to be completed in May 2027.”

As of May 2026, physical progress on the two projects stood at 17.66 per cent and 1.31 per cent respectively.

He said the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) would assess the effectiveness of the projects upon completion, particularly in reducing flood levels and the duration of flooding in downstream areas.

Meanwhile, Fadillah said a total of RM35.49 million was allocated to Selangor between 2022 and 2025 to implement 262 small-scale flood mitigation projects, of which RM2.4 million was allocated for river and drainage maintenance works in Kuala Langat.

For 2026, he said the ministry has allocated RM18 million for similar programmes in Selangor, with funding distributed according to priority risk areas identified at the state level.

“Of that amount, the Kuala Langat parliamentary constituency received RM1 million to implement eight small-scale projects under the approved scope of works.”
