Syed Saddiq to learn fate in Federal Court appeal tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 — Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman will learn his fate tomorrow on whether he will remain acquitted or be ordered to serve a prison sentence over charges involving criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of property and money laundering linked to Angkatan Bersatu Anak Muda (Armada) funds.

A three-judge panel of the Federal Court comprising Court of Appeal president Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Jais, Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali and Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah is scheduled to deliver its decision on the prosecution's final appeal against Syed Saddiq's acquittal at 9 am.

The appeal was heard over two days, with submissions concluding before the panel on December 12, 2025.

During the proceedings, the prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutors Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin, Datuk Ahmad Akram Gharib and Farah Ezlin Yusop Khan, while Syed Saddiq was represented by lawyer Datuk Hisyam Teh Poh Teik.

On December 12, 2025, Abu Bakar, who chaired the three-judge panel, granted the prosecution a one-week "cooling-off" period to review its appeal after both parties completed their submissions.

In an unprecedented move, he said the prosecution should deliberate and formally state whether it intended to proceed with the appeal.

On December 17, 2025, the Attorney General's Chambers informed the Federal Court deputy registrar by letter that the Attorney General had instructed the prosecution to proceed with the appeal and would abide by the court's decision.

On June 25 last year, the Court of Appeal discharged and acquitted the 33-year-old Syed Saddiq after allowing his appeal against the High Court's decision on November 9, 2023, which sentenced him to seven years' imprisonment, two strokes of the cane and a RM10 million fine.

The Attorney General's Chambers filed its appeal to the Federal Court the following day.

Syed Saddiq was charged with abetting Rafiq Hakim Razali, then Armada's assistant treasurer, in committing criminal breach of trust involving RM1 million from Armada's funds at CIMB Bank Berhad, KL Sentral, on March 6, 2020.

The charge was framed under Section 406 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years' imprisonment, caning and a fine.

He also faces a charge of misappropriating RM120,000 belonging to Armada Bumi Bersatu Enterprise under Section 403 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between six months and five years, caning and a fine.

In addition, he is accused of carrying out two money laundering transactions by transferring RM50,000 into his Amanah Saham Bumiputera account.

The charges were brought under Section 4(1)(b) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years' imprisonment and a fine of up to five times the value of the proceeds involved.
