Tourist numbers, Langkawi security top Dewan Rakyat agenda

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 — The impact of the West Asia conflict on foreign tourist arrivals to Malaysia and the readiness of security agencies' assets and personnel in Langkawi to address migrant smuggling activities are among the key issues to be raised at today's Dewan Rakyat sitting.

According to the Order Paper published on the official Parliament website, Dr Ahmad Fakhruddin Fakhrurazi (PN-Kuala Kedah) will ask the tourism, arts and culture minister how the conflict in West Asia has affected foreign tourist arrivals to Malaysia, particularly from the West Asian and European markets, and the government's strategies to sustain the tourism sector's growth momentum.

Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah (PN-Langkawi) will ask the home minister about the readiness of security agencies' assets and personnel in Langkawi to address the threat of migrant and controlled goods smuggling, as well as territorial waters intrusions, given the island's proximity to the Malaysia-Thailand border. He will also ask whether the ministry intends to deploy drone assets (UAVs) following an earlier application.

Also, Manndzri Nasib (BN-Tenggara) will ask the natural resources and environmental sustainability minister about the effectiveness of additional Ecological Fiscal Transfer (EFT) funding and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) community programmes in reducing human-elephant conflict, as well as the ministry's plans to work with relevant agencies to expand the use of the Elephant Electric Fencing System (SPEG) to protect local communities.

Meanwhile, Datuk Willie anak Mongin (GPS-Puncak Borneo) will ask the housing and local government minister to state the number of unsold affordable homes by state and price category, as well as the actual home ownership rate among people aged below 35 by state and parliamentary constituency.

In addition, two bills — the Sexual Offences against Children (Amendment) Bill 2026 and the Employment Insurance System (Amendment) Bill 2025 — will be tabled for second reading during today's sitting.

The current Parliament meeting will run for 16 days until July 16.
