SHAH ALAM, June 24 — A local man who tested positive for drugs and allegedly caused a five-vehicle collision on the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway on Monday has been arrested and charged at the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Court.
In a Facebook post last night, the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) confirmed that the accident occurred on the stretch of highway heading towards the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza at about 4.40 pm on June 22.
Initial investigations found that four vehicles were travelling slowly on the right and middle lanes due to traffic congestion when another vehicle, allegedly driven recklessly by the suspect, swerved between the two lanes.
“The vehicle then lost control and crashed into the four vehicles ahead. No injuries were reported involving any of the drivers,” it said.
The department said an initial urine screening conducted on the driver found that the 42-year-old man tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine.
The suspect was subsequently arrested by the Dang Wangi Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) for further action under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug abuse.
Meanwhile, the collision is being investigated by the Kuala Lumpur JSPT under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.
“On June 23, the accused was brought before the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Court, and the charge was read out at the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Magistrates’ Court. The court allowed bail of RM5,000 with one surety and set August 17 for document submission,” it said.
However, the department did not provide further details on the charge.
The Kuala Lumpur JSPT said it takes driving under the influence of drugs seriously and warned that strict action would be taken against offenders who violate traffic laws.
