SABAK BERNAM, June 14 — The state is on track to successfully host the 22nd Malaysia Games (SUKMA) and PARA SUKMA 2026, with overall preparations for the sporting event now approximately 95 per cent complete.
State executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said that all preparations involving various agencies and local authorities are progressing smoothly and according to schedule.
Several key facilities to be used during SUKMA have already been fully completed, including the Selangor Aquatic Centre, which will serve as the competition venue for several events.
“Overall, preparations for SUKMA and PARA SUKMA 2026 have reached approximately 95 per cent, and we are on the right track to ensure the Games are organised successfully.
“Several major facilities have been completed, including the Selangor Aquatic Centre, while preparations at the local authority level are also in a state of readiness, particularly in terms of infrastructure and event support facilities,” he said.
Najwan was speaking to the media after the Games' Torch Run Tour and ceremonial handover from Kuala Selangor Municipal Council president Mohamad Hanafe Basri to Sabak Bernam District Council president Awaluddin Zakaria at Dataran Bagan Terap today.
Meanwhile, the state government will hold its final steering committee meeting in July, chaired by Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari, to coordinate the final stages of preparation ahead of SUKMA in August.
He added that the meeting is important to ensure that aspect is finalised systematically, including logistics coordination, venue management, and contingent participation, thereby ensuring the Games proceed smoothly.
In a related development, Najwan said the volunteer selection process is currently in its final stage, with successful candidates expected to be contacted soon to undergo preparations before commencing their duties during SUKMA.
The Selangor Sports Council is also finalising its list of athletes who will represent the state at the Games, ensuring that the contingent comprises the strongest possible competitors.
Previously, the councillor announced that the state government had allocated RM40 million for major upgrading works at the Selangor Aquatic Centre in preparation to host SUKMA.
The upgrades include installing modern facilities, particularly timing and scoring sensor systems, as well as replacing several key components, including spectator seating areas, water pumps, and underground piping systems.
SUKMA Selangor 2026 is scheduled to take place from August 15 to August 24, while PARA SUKMA 2026 will be held from September 5 to September 14.
