MyDigital ID kiosks to adopt facial biometric checks

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — The MyDigital ID registration system at kiosks will be upgraded with facial biometric verification as part of efforts to strengthen identity security and prevent misuse, the National Security Council (NSC) said.

In a statement today, the NSC said real-time facial biometric verification against the National Registration Department's database would be conducted during the registration process.

"This measure is aimed at strengthening the accuracy of identity verification while reducing the risk of identity misuse and unauthorised access," it said.

Existing users will also be required to undergo periodic facial biometric re-verification as part of ongoing efforts to ensure the integrity and security of their digital identities continue to be safeguarded.

The security enhancements will be implemented in phases at all MyDigital ID kiosks, with maintenance work scheduled from 6 am today until 6 am on June 14.

The NSC said MyDigital ID registration could still be completed via mobile phones during the kiosk upgrade period by downloading the MyDigital ID application from the App Store, Google Play or Huawei AppGallery.

"The increasing use of digital services by the public, businesses and government agencies has made the need to protect digital identities more critical amid threats such as online fraud, identity impersonation, data theft and cyber exploitation," it said.

In this regard, MyDigital ID plays a key role in the national digital identity ecosystem by facilitating more secure and trusted identity verification across various public and private sector digital services.

The NSC said it would continue working closely with relevant agencies to coordinate security enhancement measures across identity and verification platforms, including MyKad, to ensure citizens' digital identities remain protected.
