SHAH ALAM, June 10 – Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education’s (ITE) industry-driven technical and vocational education and training (TVET) model offers Selangor valuable lessons in strengthening workforce development and industry competitiveness, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said closer collaboration between training institutions and industry players could provide students with practical exposure and clearer career pathways, while helping companies secure a steady pipeline of skilled talent.

“It is a win-win approach that strengthens both workforce readiness and industry competitiveness,” he said in a Facebook post after a visit to ITE College West, one of three colleges under ITE, Singapore’s leading TVET institution.

During the visit, he received a briefing by college representatives before touring the campus and its facilities.

Amirudin said what stands out about ITE is its strong integration between education and industry, with students being trained in facilities designed to mirror real workplace environments, including in fields of advanced engineering, automation and robotics, hospitality, and digital technology laboratories.

“More importantly, ITE has developed strong industry partnerships that allow companies to participate directly in training and curriculum development, ensuring graduates possess skills that are immediately relevant to the workforce.

“This industry-driven model presents valuable lessons for Selangor,” he said.

Amirudin said talent development remains a priority for Selangor because the state positions itself as a hub for semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, AI, and digital economy.

He added that there is a significant potential for collaboration and knowledge exchange between ITE and the Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC), especially in strengthening industry-led TVET programmes, curriculum development, talent certification, and workforce training.

“I look forward to exploring cooperation opportunities between STDC and ITE that can further enhance Selangor’s TVET ecosystem and support the development of a highly skilled workforce for the industries of tomorrow.”

ITE College West, which has more than 8,000 full-time students enrolled, offers programmes under its School of Business and Services, School of Electronics and Info-Comm Technology, School of Engineering, and School of Hospitality.
