Cermat Madani offers extra 10 pct insurance rebate for safe drivers

KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 — Motorists who practise safe driving and who renew their insurance on the MyJPJ app can enjoy a premium rebate of up to 10 per cent under the Cermat Madani initiative launched yesterday.

According to a report by New Straits Times, the discount is on top of the existing no-claim discount (NCD).

“This means they could enjoy a total discount of up to 65 per cent on the premium they would otherwise have to pay,” Transport Minister Anthony Loke said at a press conference here yesterday, as reported by the English daily.

Motorists are eligible for up to 55 per cent NCD if they maintain a claims-free driving record.

Loke said the initiative is a collaboration between the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and insurance companies to reduce vehicle ownership costs while rewarding drivers who practise safe driving.

He said that under this initiative, participating insurance firms use a risk score generated by an AI system based on MySikap driver data for premium assessment.

“This is a new approach that provides incentives to low-risk drivers through more competitive premiums, thereby encouraging a culture of safe driving among road users,” he told a media conference after the launch of Cermat Madani here yesterday.

Loke said that at this initial stage, the assessment only involves JPJ and police data, while data on summons issued by local authorities is not being included for now.

According to him, the rebate rate offered to motorists would be determined by insurance providers based on their risk assessments, with no fixed limit or number of summons set by JPJ.

“However, the additional rebate under this initiative is capped at a maximum of 10 per cent, in line with regulations set by Bank Negara Malaysia.

“Ten insurance companies have joined Cermat Madani and more companies are encouraged to join this initiative,” he said.

Loke said the programme does not involve any additional cost to JPJ as it leverages existing systems and facilitates access to data required by insurance providers for risk assessment purposes.

Motorists can renew their licences and insurance on the MyJPJ app up to two months before the expiry date without having to visit a JPJ counter.

The additional rebate is offered unconditionally for three months from today to September 9, before being awarded based on risk assessments, such as crash records and traffic summonses in the MySikap database, from September 10.
