KANGAR, May 30 — Police have recorded a statement from Perlis Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah and seized a shotgun and ammunition as part of investigations into a viral video allegedly showing him shooting a cow.
Kangar police chief ACP Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said police received a report from a member of the public at 4.51 pm yesterday regarding the 38-second video, which purportedly showed Abu Bakar firing at a cow at Dataran Lok 9 in Kuala Perlis.
“Acting on the report, a team from the Kangar district police headquarters recorded the statement of the Perlis menteri besar in connection with the incident.
“Police also seized a shotgun believed to have been used by the menteri besar, as well as nine buckshot cartridges for further investigation,” he said in a statement today.
Yusharifuddin said Abu Bakar had informed investigators that he acted after a cow went on a rampage and posed a threat to workers and members of the public attending the Kuala Perlis Perdana Korban programme.
Checks with the licensing division of the Kangar district police headquarters confirmed that Abu Bakar is a licensed firearm holder for the shotgun, he added.
The case is being investigated under Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960, which carries a maximum jail term of one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both upon conviction.
