Eight arrested in drug raid at hotel

KUALA LUMPUR, May 24 — The police arrested eight individuals of various nationalities for alleged drug abuse in a raid at a popular hotel along Jalan Stesen Sentral this morning.

Brickfields police chief ACP Hoo Chang Hook said the raid was conducted following the death of a 31-year-old local man who had been brought from the hotel to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital's (HKL) emergency department yesterday morning.

“The victim’s body underwent a post-mortem examination at the HKL Forensic Department at noon today.

“The cause of death is still pending laboratory test results, and the case has been classified as a sudden death report,” he said in a statement today.

Acting on information obtained, a team from the Brickfields district police headquarters' Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department raided the victim’s hotel room at 4am.

It resulted in the arrest of eight individuals, comprising two local men, two Singaporean men, and one each from Hong Kong, Vietnam, Indonesia, and China.

“The inspection also led to the seizure of a transparent plastic packet containing substances believed to be ketamine weighing 1.5g, as well as three pills suspected to be Ecstasy weighing 0.7g,” Hoo said.

All suspects have been remanded for three days to assist in investigations conducted under Section 12(2) and Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
