New Tamil Nadu CM Vijay thanks PM Anwar for greetings

HYDERABAD, May 12 — Tamil Nadu's new Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his greetings and said he is committed to building warmer ties with Malaysia.

The 51-year-old popular Tamil movie star-turned-politician said he was "deeply honoured by the warm congratulations" from the Malaysian leader.

"Thank you for your gracious gesture. I am committed to fostering greater cooperation and enhancing the bond of friendship between Tamil Nadu and Malaysia," Vijay said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

He was sworn in as the southern Indian state's head of government on Sunday (May 10), following his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party's victory in the assembly elections in April.

Earlier, Anwar congratulated the new Chief Minister and commended his electoral performance.

"I warmly congratulate my friend Vijay on being elected Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu," the prime minister said in a post on X today.

"For many years, his adoring fans watched him defeat corrupt politicians and assorted villains within three hours, usually after a short interval. The people of Tamil Nadu have now entrusted Vijay with a responsibility far greater than any role performed on-screen," Anwar added.

The Prime Minister noted that Malaysia and Tamil Nadu share deep historical, cultural, and people-to-people ties across generations, and that he looks forward to working closely with Vijay in the years ahead.
