KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 — The government is still examining the best mechanism for the proposed revision of petrol subsidies for high-income earners, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Discussions on the proposal have been ongoing for the past several weeks, involving various ministries and relevant committees, but no final decision has been made on whether the targeted subsidy scheme would apply to the T20, T15, or other income categories.
“The proposal has been studied over the past three weeks to a month, but it has not yet been finalised whether it will involve the T20 or T15 groups, so that it does not burden the upper middle-income group and can be implemented more effectively,” he told the media after an engagement session with Indian students at Universiti Malaya today.
Anwar was responding to questions regarding the government’s proposal to review fuel subsidies for high-income earners, as well as plans concerning the continuity of the country’s oil supply, which are expected to be announced in the middle of this month.
Previously, Economy Minister Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said that Anwar was expected to announce plans to ensure the country’s fuel supply continuity amid global uncertainties stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The plan is expected to focus on ensuring sufficient domestic fuel supply to sustain the country’s economic activities, following previous assurances by the government that current supplies would remain adequate until June.
