SHAH ALAM, May 9 — The Selangor Recycling Programme (SELKitar) has successfully reduced waste generation through the collection of about 60,000kg of recyclable items every month since its launch a year ago.

KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) project implementation manager Ammar Ehsan Omar said the initiative carried out in collaboration with Nestlé Malaysia has also helped reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill sites.

He said the programme currently covers recyclable collection services involving 400,000 homes across Selangor.

“On average, SELKitar is able to collect about 60,000kg of recyclable items every month. This helps reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill sites.

“When we are able to collect more, we can save natural resources and at the same time contribute towards environmental conservation. It also provides financial returns when the items are sold,” he told Media Selangor.

In April last year, the Selangor government, through KDEBWM, formalised a collaboration with Nestlé Malaysia to strengthen recycling activities through a door-to-door collection system.

Menteri Besar Dato' Amirudin Shari previously said the strategic partnership is in line with goals outlined under the 2025 Selangor Budget to reduce waste in local authority areas and lessen dependence on landfill sites.

Earlier, Ammar Ehsan participated in the SELKitar Walk programme held at Meranti Residensi, Puchong, which was officiated by Sepang Municipal Council president Ani Ahmad today.

According to him, the encouraging response from residents throughout the state is expected to support Selangor’s efforts to strengthen environmental sustainability practices.

He added that KDEBWM plans to further expand the programme while working with various stakeholders to ensure the initiative continues consistently.

“God willing, this effort will allow us to reach a better level, comparable with first-class developed nations, where our society is able to separate recyclable items.

“We hope this effort continues. After one year, we can see SELKitar showing improvements in terms of resident participation and the quantity of items collected.”
