State plans one-stop traditional food hub to showcase local fare

SHAH ALAM, May 8 — A one-stop centre will be established in the state to feature heritage food and craft that represent Selangor’s identity, said state executive councillor for housing and culture Datuk Borhan Aman Shah.

He added that the hub would allow people to sample a diverse selection of local fare and learn about Selangor culture, all under one roof.

He said that even if Selangor is progressing in physical, industrial and commercial terms, the gastronomy sector must be strengthened as it affects the local economy.

“Selangor has food that forms its identity; it is appropriate to have a one-stop centre to allow the people to taste heritage food without them having to wait for festivals or events.

“This one stop-centre will also feature cultural (performances) and dances like Selangor joget and cempuling music. Nine-petal medlar flower (Selangor’s official flower) batik clothes would also be available here,” he told Media Selangor.

However, Borhan said, traders who sell heritage food in their neighbourhoods are encouraged to continue doing so to ensure the continuity of local products.

He added that his office is formulating a working paper on a special grant to support heritage food industry players.

“For example, cempuling music players are assisted in terms of equipment so the culture can be preserved. Similarly, the gastronomy sector must be assisted in the form of grants as support.

“For now, renowned hotels have started playing their role by introducing heritage dishes like satay and nasi ambeng to visitors,” Borhan added.
