SHAH ALAM, May 4 — The state government will mobilise local authorities to review and investigate all high-risk drains across Selangor, following two tragic incidents involving children who fell in and were later found drowned.

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said they take the incidents seriously and want the local authorities to identify the root causes as well as the necessary improvement measures.

“Local authorities will take action on high-risk drains, as some of these fall under their jurisdiction.

“But when it comes to rivers and the like, they are too extensive to manage comprehensively. So we need buffer zones and designated areas to prevent such incidents from occurring,” he said.

Amirudin was speaking to the media after officiating the Selangor State-Level Labour Day Celebration 2026 today, which was also attended by state executive councillor for human resources and poverty eradication Papparaidu Veraman, at the State Secretariat Building today.

He also advised all parties to share responsibility in ensuring children’s safety, particularly during recreational activities.

“So the condition of drains is one aspect, but all parties must also play a role, including the community, not just parents, to prevent children from playing in such areas,” Amirudin said.

Last week, a 10-year-old boy was found drowned after falling into a drain during heavy rain in Bandar Puncak Alam, Kuala Selangor.

On Friday (May 1), Nur Qaseh Deandra Mohd Qayyum, nine, was reported missing after she was believed to have fallen into a drain in Bandar Mahkota Cheras, before her body was later found in Sungai Langat yesterday.
