SHAH ALAM, May 4 — Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari urged the authorities to take firm action against individuals involved in disseminating content insulting the royal institution, in order to curb such acts from becoming more widespread.

The call was made following increasingly bold actions by irresponsible parties in insulting the royal institution recently, which has raised concerns.

“Sometimes people act beyond acceptable boundaries, so I urge the police to take action as it enables the government to act early on matters related to 3R (race, religion, royalty).

“This has often been criticised by the Opposition before, suggesting it was an attempt to curb freedom of speech, but the impact I see now is extraordinary and must be addressed,” he said.

Amirudin was speaking to the media after officiating the Selangor State-Level Labour Day Celebration 2026 today, which was also attended by state executive councillor for human resources and poverty eradication Papparaidu Veraman, at the State Secretariat Building today.

He added that the royal institution is a symbol of unity among the people and must be respected and protected, instead of being subjected to public ridicule.

The Menteri Besar also expressed his appreciation to the police for taking swift action in arresting the individual involved in spreading insulting content against the royal institution.

“I thank the police for acting swiftly in identifying and arresting those involved, and I hope firm action will be taken against them,” Amirudin said.

Yesterday, a man in his 30s was arrested in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, to assist in investigations into a post containing insulting imagery directed at the Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj.

The arrest was made at 7.10pm by police officers from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department and the Penang police contingent headquarters, in cooperation with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.

Previously, the Selangor police confirmed receiving 280 reports nationwide regarding the circulation of a caricature deemed insulting to His Royal Highness, which was uploaded via a Facebook account on April 25.
