State partners with Netherlands to address floods, details due in June — MB

SHAH ALAM, April 22 — The Selangor government is exploring various approaches to address floods, with details due to be announced in June or July, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He added that all aspects are being studied, including a partnership with the Netherlands, while decisions made will be shared by state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim.

“From 2023 to 2024, several meetings have been held with representatives from (the Netherlands).

“However, now it is still at the memorandum of cooperation (MOC) stage, and only involves the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA); it hasn’t been expanded to the state level,” he explained when met after the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) Showcase at Wisma DNS here today.

On Monday, when opening the First Meeting of the Fourth Term of the 15th Selangor State Legislative Assembly, Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj advised the state administration to prioritise flood mitigation through more effective measures.

His Royal Highness also said multiple reminders have been issued to urge the state government to seek international experts’ views, especially from the Netherlands, to formulate the best approach to manage recurrent floods.

In another development, Amirudin said the moratorium on logging remains for controlled activity, not for commercial purposes.

“We don’t have commercial logging efforts, only cleanup for certain reasons like infrastructure projects,” he added.

According to Amirudin, among these projects are highway construction and electricity cable network installation, which require limited, controlled site-clearing.
