KUALA LUMPUR, Apr 16 — Universiti Malaya (UM) has confirmed that scenes in a theatre performance that went viral on social media were not in line with the approved script.
In a statement today, the university said its review found deviations from the script that had undergone a vetting process, constituting a breach of the Karnival Teater (KARVITER) competition rules.
According to UM, all performances are required to comply with strict guidelines, including being free from negative elements, provocation and content that could affect religious, moral and ethical values.
“The performance staged clearly did not adhere to the approved script and constitutes a violation of the competition rules,” the statement said.
As a result, UM has ruled that the performance is not eligible for evaluation and will take follow-up action to tighten monitoring.
The university also stressed that it will not compromise on any breaches of programme guidelines. It has apologised for the lapse.
The issue drew public attention after a recording of a scene from the performance went viral on social media, prompting mixed reactions from the public.
