SHAH ALAM, April 11 — Road fatalities recorded during the 2026 Chinese New Year and Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive periods rose by 17 per cent compared to the previous year.
Buletin TV3 reported the Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail as saying that 90 deaths were reported during the period, up from 77 previously.
“Therefore, I urge all road users to always comply with traffic laws, remain patient, ensure their vehicles are in good condition, and get sufficient rest before starting their journeys.
“Remember, life is irreplaceable,” he said during an Ops Selamat 25 and 26 appreciation ceremony last night.
Ops Selamat 25 was implemented during the Chinese New Year holiday period, while Ops Selamat 26 took place throughout the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
Khalid added that the total number of road accidents increased slightly by nearly one per cent, with 9,934 cases recorded compared to 9,859 previously.
Meanwhile, enforcement efforts saw 144,726 summonses issued nationwide, an increase of 34.8 per cent, or 37,361, compared with those issued during Ops Selamat 24.
However, criminal cases declined over the same period, with 747 recorded this year compared to 858 in 2025.
He attributed the reduction to intensified patrols and strengthened community policing initiatives.
