SHAH ALAM, April 9 — The Malaysian Games (SUKMA) Selangor 2026 will go on even amid the global energy crisis and current economic pressures, said Youth and Sports Minister Mohammed Taufiq Johari, as reported by Berita Harian.
The decision was reached at a SUKMA Supreme Committee meeting he chaired earlier today. Also present were Olympic Council of Malaysia president Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria, National Sports Council director-general Jefri Ngadirin, and state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi.
Taufiq said the call was made after the committee considered all aspects, including the level of preparations done and athletes’ readiness.
“This decision was made by considering preparations already done by parties involved, especially the Selangor government as the organiser, and athlete lineups in each state that have been preparing (for the event),” he said here today.
He explained that postponing the biennial sporting event would present significant financial implications to organisers.
He also said the SUKMA Supreme Committee agreed the event would run on a smaller scale to save costs, but asserted that the reduction won’t affect the number of sports contested or the quality of the tournament.
He said this is the best approach in the face of current economic challenges without sacrificing the nation’s sports development goals.
“The SUKMA Supreme Committee will continue holding discussions to ensure SUKMA Selangor 2026 can go on as planned, with emphasis on efficient spending and cost control,” Taufiq added.
SUKMA Selangor 2026 will be held August 15 to 24 with the opening ceremony at the Sepang International Circuit, with Para SUKMA to follow from September 5 to 14.
