IPOH, April 5 — National oil company Petronas is now a net importer of fuel, no longer an exporter as previously understood, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said this is why Malaysia remains exposed to global energy supply pressures despite being an oil-producing nation.
“Petronas is now a net importer; we need to buy oil. Supply for April and May is sufficient, but for June it is still uncertain,” he said when officiating the Perak Madani Rakyat Programme 2026 here yesterday.
Anwar said this in response to perceptions that Malaysia wouldn’t face an oil crisis amid the conflict in West Asia.
According to him, the situation requires all parties to understand current realities and work together on solutions to ensure the country’s energy supply remains stable.
