State channels RM1.5m to Gaza aid effort ahead of Sunday flotilla departure

SHAH ALAM, April 3 — The Selangor government has contributed RM1.5 million to help Gazans in Palestine through the Malaysian Emergency Relief Mission to the enclave and the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) 2.0, which departs on Sunday.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the cash aid would fund basic necessities for affected Palestinians.

He also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for entrusting him to participate in GSF 2.0.

“Thank God, and thank you to the prime minister for this huge responsibility. God willing, I will fulfil the duty to the best of my ability as a representative of the government.

“The Selangor government has also contributed RM1.5 million to fill the containers. God willing, the aid will benefit thousands, even tens of thousands of long-suffering Gazans,” he told a press conference after chairing the Selangor Economic Action Council (MTES) meeting at the State Secretariat Building here today.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said he is trying to participate in GSF 2.0 without having his state assembly sitting attendance affected, saying: “I will make sure to fulfil both responsibilities as best I can.”

The sitting will start on April 20.

He added that the mission involves people’s representatives from various parties and said it is a national effort not based on political interests.

“I ask for Malaysians’ prayers and blessings so this (GSF 2.0) mission … (manages) to help Gazans,” Amirudin said.
