NAYPYIDAW, April 3 — Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing has managed to secure more than half the votes in the Union Parliament to win the country’s presidential election.
Xinhua reported that Myanmar's Presidential Electoral College, comprising all Union Parliament representatives, convened today to elect the President, with 584 representatives in attendance.
During the voting session, Min, a presidential candidate nominated by representatives of the Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House), received 429 votes.
U Nyo Saw, representing the group of military representatives from both houses, obtained 126 votes, while Nan Ni Ni Aye, nominated by the Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) representatives, secured 29 votes.
Under the country's electoral system, the Presidential Electoral College votes to select the president from among three vice presidents.
On Tuesday (March 31), Min, Nan, and Nyo Saw were elected the country's vice presidents.
Yesterday, Myanmar’s Union Parliament announced that all three vice presidents had passed the scrutiny of presidential candidate qualifications.
