West Asia conflict: Selangor to announce special task force by Monday

SHAH ALAM, April 3 — The state government will announce the line-up of a special task force to address the impact of the geopolitical crisis in West Asia by Monday (April 6) at the latest.

Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said he will chair a special meeting this afternoon to finalise the team, which is expected to comprise experts from various economic sectors.

“I will chair a special meeting (today), but for the special task force, I will seek recommendations from experts. The overall framework must be clearly understood so that we can address the real issues.

“It involves the livelihoods of the people and the sustainability of our economy. Our efforts are to ensure continuity of daily life; although there may be some impact, things will continue to run well.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, we appointed a former health minister to lead, so as this issue concerns the economy, we will be referring extensively to economic experts,” he said.

Amirudin was speaking to the media during the state-level Jelajah Taat Setia Madani Programme, which was also attended by the Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, at Dewan Raja Muda Musa today.

On Wednesday (April 1), he announced that Selangor would establish a special task force to strengthen Selangor's preparedness in facing global uncertainties following the West Asia conflict.

The Menteri Besar noted that the move would mark the beginning of a comprehensive state-level action plan to support the Federal government’s efforts to address the crisis’s impact.

The situation in West Asia has escalated since February 28, when Israel and the United States (US) launched attacks on Iran, which were subsequently retaliated against by Tehran through strikes on US interests in Gulf countries.

Following this, Iran took the drastic step of closing and restricting the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply, in response to the conflict.
