SHAH ALAM, April 2 — Selangor’s athlete selection for the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) has entered its final phase, with the definitive list expected to be finalised this month.
Selangor SUKMA contingent chief Abbas Salimi Azmi said the screening process is still ongoing, with a long list of athletes currently being assessed before each sports association finalises its shortlist in the near future.
“Last month, we held a meeting with all managers and team heads. Thankfully, the feedback was positive and they are highly motivated to ensure medal targets are achieved.
“However, several issues need to be resolved, including the long list of athletes as many have applied to represent the state. I am confident this will be settled this month.
“Secondly, several venues facing technical issues require attention from the Selangor Sports Council (MSN). Next week, I will begin visits to Kuala Langat, which will host sailing events, and I am confident these issues will be addressed promptly,” he told Media Selangor.

Abbas said preparations for the Selangor contingent began early, immediately after the conclusion of SUKMA 2024 in Sarawak.
“Thanks to God, in Sarawak we succeeded in contributing gold medals and upon returning, we immediately began training and team formation.
“Preparations across all sports have been very satisfactory, as we started early,” he said.
In February, Selangor State Sports Council executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi said the state contingent is targeting about 80 gold medals at the biennial games.
He said Selangor has the potential to emerge champions in 15 to 20 per cent of the total 474 events contested across 37 sports.
At SUKMA 2024 in Sarawak, Selangor finished third overall with 181 medals — 56 gold, 64 silver and 61 bronze — surpassing its target.
The 22nd SUKMA is scheduled to take place from August 15 to 24, 2026, with the opening ceremony at the Sepang International Circuit, while the Para SUKMA will be held from September 15 to 20, 2026.
