SHAH ALAM, March 31 — Women in Selangor are still wary of going out at night, which has led the state government to commit to improving safety this year, said state executive councillor for women empowerment and welfare Anfaal Saari.
She said only 14 per cent of women are confident about going out at night, while 49 per cent report feeling “quite safe”.
“The rest think it is unsafe, which shows that the issue of women safety must be given serious attention,” she added.
According to her, this cannot just focus on individual awareness, but also on the comprehensive improvement of the entire environment.
“A safe environment requires cooperation from all parties including local authorities, the community, and the state government,” Anfaal said during the Townhall X Wanita Selangor at the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Building here today. Also present was Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.
Among the state government’s programmes to this end is the Selangor Bercahaya initiative, where the state has installed solar-powered lights to improve visibility in public areas and reduce crime risks.
The state has also given focus to women’s welfare, especially single mothers whose ex-husbands refuse to pay alimony.
Anfaal said a special fund managed by the Selangor Shariah Judiciary Department would be reactivated for such women.
“This fund will be re-established to ensure single mothers receive appropriate support, especially after divorce,” she added.
