Hot weather warning during festive season: Outdoor activities may lead to heatstroke

SHAH ALAM, March 24 — The public is advised to remain vigilant amid hot weather conditions, particularly during the festive season when outdoor activities tend to increase.

State executive councillor for public health and the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said people should stay updated on the latest weather information, especially during Hari Raya Aidilfitri, when visits and travel are more frequent.

She also advised limiting outdoor activities and avoiding prolonged exposure during high temperatures to reduce the risk of heatstroke and dehydration.

“Monitor hot weather updates from time to time, especially during the festive season, which involves more outdoor activities.

“Avoid staying outdoors for too long during high temperatures to reduce the risk of heatstroke and dehydration,” Jamaliah told Media Selangor.

She emphasised that the public should refrain from open burning as it could worsen hot weather conditions and affect air quality.

“Open burning is a serious offence under the Environmental Quality (Amendment) Act 2024. Offenders may face fines of up to RM1 million or imprisonment of up to five years, or both,” Jamaliah said.

Similarly, the councillor urged the public not to carry out burning in residential, agricultural, or open areas.

Any incidents can be reported to the Selangor Environment Department via the hotline 1-800-88-2727 or through the eAduan JAS app.

Yesterday, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad urged the public to be more cautious amid extreme heat following a rise in heatstroke-related cases in the country.

He said that so far this year, 15 heat-related cases have been recorded, including one fatality involving a child.
