DPM says Petronas has contingency plans amid global conflicts

SHAH ALAM, March 22 — Petronas is exploring various contingency plans to secure alternative energy supplies in the event of disruptions to global oil and gas shipments caused by ongoing conflicts, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

The energy transition and water transformation minister said the national oil company is monitoring global developments while preparing measures to ensure stable domestic energy supply.

“Petronas has looked into various plans to find alternative supplies if gas or oil cannot be delivered through areas affected by the current conflicts.

“It is also monitoring supplies from Australia and countries in the Asia-Pacific region. All these alternatives are being prepared and, so far, thank God, planning is going well and our supply remains stable,” he said today, as reported by Borneo Post.

He added that the measures are to safeguard national energy security following tensions in West Asia.

Despite stable supply, Fadillah emphasised that energy conservation is key to efficiently managing national resources.

“What is more important, just like water, is that we must practise moderation in using energy so we do not burn gas unnecessarily,” he said.

He added that the government has introduced several measures to curb internal energy use, including guidelines on air-conditioning.

“Government offices must ensure that if they use air conditioning, they should maintain it at around 24ºC. This would reduce gas consumption,” he said.

Additionally, he said work-from-home arrangements are being considered for non-essential roles to reduce overall energy demand.

“We are also considering working from home for non-essential categories,” he said.

Fadillah called on the public to play their part by using electricity responsibly.

“The public must ensure electricity is used prudently. If it is not needed, make sure the air-conditioner is turned off and switches are off. Only turn them on when necessary,” he said.

Fadillah stressed that cooperation from both the government and the public is essential to ensure efficient use of energy resources.
