SHAH ALAM, March 21 — Look, smell, and taste. These three principles are recommended by the Selangor Health Department (JKNS) before the public consumes any food during the festive season.
In addition to reducing the risk of food poisoning, it advises that food should ideally be consumed within no more than four hours after preparation.
“Proper handwashing before preparing and consuming food is also essential in preventing food poisoning,” JKNS told Media Selangor.
The public is also encouraged to practise moderation under the concept of “enjoy, but in moderation”, as excessive food intake can lead to weight gain and increase the risk of chronic diseases.
It added that high-calorie foods that should be consumed in moderation include lemang, rendang, and various types of traditional kuih that are high in sugar, salt, and fat, and sugary drinks should be avoided.
“Choose smaller portion sizes and prioritise healthier options such as fruits, low-oil foods, and dishes with less coconut milk,” JKNS said.
Simultaneously, the public is encouraged to engage in light physical activity, such as walking, when visiting relatives.
Mental well-being should also be prioritised by getting sufficient rest, especially for those travelling long distances to return to their hometowns.
From a hygiene perspective, it urges the public to ensure their home environment is clean and free from stagnant water to prevent the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes.
“Clean drains and ensure water storage containers are tightly covered. Use mosquito repellent, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon.
“Spend at least 10 minutes each week inspecting and cleaning the surrounding area of your home. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms such as high fever, headaches or joint pain,” JKNS said.
