Microsleep: Short naps effective when driving long distances

SHAH ALAM, March 19 — Microsleeping while driving, often caused by fatigue, can be prevented by taking 15- to 20-minute naps, KPJ Klang Specialist Hospital internal medicine and respiratory specialist Dr Affida Ahmad said.

She added that contrary to popular belief, taking long naps is ineffective as it may leave drivers even sleepier.

“When sleepy, it is recommended to stop and rest in a well-ventilated area to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Apart from choosing a safe spot, remember that a quality nap should last only 15 to 20 minutes.

“Longer naps can lead to a deeper sleep phase, making one feel more tired,” she said on Media Selangor’s Bicara Semasa programme recently.

Dr Affida recommended that drivers consume about 150mg of caffeine — roughly a medium-sized cup of coffee — before napping, to boost alertness afterwards.

“Caffeine does not work immediately, as it needs time to take effect. It is recommended to consume it shortly before napping so that when you wake up, your body feels more refreshed.

“After waking up, drivers can also wash their face, walk around, or do some light exercise to get their muscles active before continuing their journey safely.”

She also advised that passengers play an active role in ensuring the driver is fit to operate a vehicle, especially long distance.

“If they notice the driver is unfit to continue, they should voice a warning and have the courage to ask the driver to stop when tired.

“When driving for more than two hours, fatigue is inevitable, and chatting cannot counter drowsiness as it only provides temporary relief,” Dr Affida said.

It was reported previously that microsleep is a major contributor to road crashes in Malaysia, being the factor behind about 20 per cent of cases each year, including fatal ones.

The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) said microsleep is caused by fatigue and exhaustion, as well as by the body’s biological clock, especially during festive seasons when long journeys, extended driving times, and changes in driving routines are common.
