Two charged with trafficking over three tonnes of drugs

KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 — Two men were charged in the Magistrate's Court today on two counts of trafficking more than 3,000kg of drugs early this month.

Chew Weng Han, 38, and Liang Kar Jun, 44, a transporter, nodded after the charges were read out before Magistrate Arunjothy M. Selvaraju, but no plea was recorded as the case falls under the High Court's jurisdiction.

The duo are charged with two counts of trafficking methamphetamine weighing 3,320.69kg in 3,205 transparent plastic bags and ecstasy weighing 1.438kg in four transparent plastic bags at a premises in Taman Gembira at 7.35pm on March 2.

The charge, under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and is punishable under Section 39B (2) of the same Act, provides the death penalty or life imprisonment and a maximum of 15 strokes of the cane if the death penalty is not imposed.

Chew and Liang were not granted bail, and the court set June 16 for mention to submit the chemical report.

The case was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Vivi' Asnita Zaina' Larifin, while the two accused were represented by lawyer Mohamed Ashmeer Mohamed Ashrof Raja.
